anyone else read the new English-language version by Iris Chang? Holy shit I can't believe the Japanese massacred so many of my people in one month. From now on, I'm boycotting all Japanese goods until an official government apology is issued, which will never happen.

Did anyone hear how the war criminals in Japan are still celebrated as war heroes? That's sick, if you ask me...

    are you also aware of

the sad history of Iris Chang?

As I understand it, her depression stemmed from the research she did for this book, although of course one must beware of oversimplification in matters such as these.

There's a small organization on Sacramento just above Kearny, I think, that is dedicated to apologies and reparations by Japan. You might want to wander over & see what they have to say.

I don't think anyone can oversimplify facts that have been confirmed over and over. The Rape of Nanking did occur. The cruelty that was exhibited by the Japanese soldiers involved with the genocides is not in question.

And yes, I was aware of Iris Chang's suicide. It was well-covered in the Chronicle and other American papers. Tragic? Yes indeed.

Of course, I expect Japanese World War 2 apologists to pop out of the woodwork at any moment now.

I would actually like to see how someone will rationalize the atrocities of the Sino-Japanese war.

I think if you read my post again, you'll see that I was referring to Chang's suicide and the depression brought on by her research and warning against oversimplification of the causes of her depression, not oversimplification of the matters covered in her book.

You seem very eager to find people to disagree with you. I did not and do not question the accuracy of her book.

I had hoped that, given your intense reaction to the book, my post would lead you to other matters that would also be of interest to you. I am sorry that it did not.

          Jane,

Please accept my sincere apologies for my misinterpretation of your previous post. I read it wrong, and you didn't need to clarify your statement, but you took the time to do so anyway.

Take care, and hope to see you at the next rally.

I was overwhelmed by "The Rape of Nanking" and unfortunately, I was not able to finish reading it. I gave it away.

I find it weird considering I have a strong interest in the Jewish Holocaust and this interest had taken me as far as Auschwitz...

    but then....

I was not able to stomach "The Rape of Nanking"

Iris Chang actually had a position at UCSB. I knew her and was shocked when I read of her suicide. I do not, however, believe that she commited suicide as a result of her research. Apparently, she had a long history of depression, which you would never have guessed if you met her. She was a gem, and the world is a dimmer place without her.

As to Nanking, aye. The Japanese should apologize for it, as well as for what they did in the Philippines and Indonesia during WWII.
